Help a student AND get rid of electronic waste
Posted by UHA Association on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 Under: Recycling
I am collecting electronic waste for the first 6 weeks of school and I NEED your help for my SUST 499 project.
Do you have a bunch of old electronics just lying around the house, taking up space? Not sure what to do with
them? Does it even work? And WHO CARES?!?
I do.
Electronic waste is anything that uses electricity to perform its function that has either been destroyed,
malfunctioned, outdated, or simply just forgot about. But that doesn’t mean it’s lost its value….
In the US, we are beginning to recognize a trend. A trend in the shift of waste. In 2009, 141 million cell phones
made it into our landfills. What will be thrown in there today? At the rate we are going, we see a dramatic rise in
electronics in landfills constituting for 2/3 of the weight produced annually. Whatever isn’t left internally is traded
overseas to Asia and Africa for them to deal with.
My goal is to bring awareness to this situation through an intervention. Raising awareness not only changes
perspective, but it also inspires creativity and innovation.
ANYTHING that you are not using and need to get out of the way, I will take. It does not need to be
operational. There is a sample list below of the items I will be accepting:
Computer Monitors less than 16”
CELL PHONES
Televisions under 16”
Printers
Scanners
Speakers
Stereo equipment
Lights (prefer operational)
Chargers (ANY KIND)
Radios
Curling Irons
Hair Dryers
Toys
CDs
Car electrical equipment
Computer cases
Computer components
Small kitchen appliances
WIRE – ANY AND ALL
Extension cords
Any other electronics that I might have forgotten
*********** PLEASE NOTE****************
I don’t not want things you currently use in your life or if you would rather sell it to make money. This is a capstone project that is being built from the electronics we consume.
Please bring smaller items to my studio desk in the northeast corner of the second level, or arrange a meeting time with me via email: bontly@unm.edu
-- ALL LARGER ITEMS MUST BE SCHEDULED FOR DROP OFF --
